He was an editor for the journal Nature for a decade, is a frequent contributor to the newspaper The Guardian, hosts the BBC Radio 4 programme Inside Science, has produced several science documentaries and has published books related to genetics and the origin of life.
Book fanatics headed to Charlotte Square in Edinburgh which is the hub of the international Book Festival to meet the authors and also to meet up with fellow fans of the printed word.
