Super low tides at Portobello reveals a different world. The regular tidal cycle of high and low tides has another longer cycle of lower lows and higher highs. These extreme tides are called Spring Tides, even although they accur throughout the year. Today's low tide was about a metre lower than the average low tide, revealing another hundred metres of mud and sand and providing a view of Portobello for explorers on foot that is usually only seen by the local rowing club and others on the water.
