Travellers on the A1701 were willing to lend a hand to help tow a car out of a ditch despite the frozen roads. Bob Watson was travelling in his Ford Focus from Edinburgh to Moffat when his back wheel dropped into a small pothole, abouit nince miles from the town, which spun his car 180 degrees and into a ditch. His best towing rope was at home and his back up straps were not up to the job when he was getting a tow from Range Rover. Another set of travellers stoped as they had a tow bar but due to the angle of the car and the ice, the Fopcus only managed to be pulled out about a foot before it bottomed out. Luckliy a snow plough/gritter stopped and gritted the road to provide purchase for a tow truck with an electric winch to extracate the Focus from the ditch. Many hands make a difference.
• Super low tides at Portobello reveals a different world. The regular tidal cycle of high and low tides has another longer cycle of lower lows and higher highs. These extreme tides are called Spring Tides, even although they accur throughout the year. Today's low tide was about a metre lower than the average low tide, revealing another hundred metres of mud and sand and providing a view of Portobello for explorers on foot that is usually only seen by the local rowing club and others on the water.
HMS Anson arrives home to HMNB Clyde today for the first time. Anson is the fifth of the new Astute-class submarines to join the Royal Navy fleet, joining HMS Astute, Ambush, Artful and Audacious. Total displacement, 7,800 tonnes, length 97 metres with a top speed of over 30 knots.

The submarine is the eighth Royal Navy vessel to bear the Anson name, after Admiral George Anson.

The Astute class – the first nuclear-powered submarines to be designed entirely in a three-dimensional, computer-aided environment – represent the cutting edge of the UK’s military capabilities.

They are the most advanced boats ever operated by the Royal Navy, providing the capability needed to defend the UK and its allies’ interests at home and overseas.

They are armed with the long-range Tomahawk land attack missiles and Spearfish heavyweight torpedoes.

The nuclear reactors that power the Astute class never need to be refuelled during their 25-year service period, while the ability to purify water and air means their range is only limited by the amount of food on board.
• The monthly Portobello Market - no, not that one, the one that takes place on the first Saturday of every month in Brighton Park in Edinburgh's seaside suburb of Portobello - was busy with customers this morning. As always, customers at the many stalls were able to choose from a wide range of food and other products with both ready-to-eat takeway food and food supplies for the kitchen particularly popular. Portobello feels more and more like a village in the city. - typifying the 'Think Global Shop Local' philosophy.
Hastings-based artist Greig Burgoyne started his live-art performance on the beach at Portobelllo - the site of the old Portobello pier. The piece, Pier to Pier, takes the form of a day-long drawing performance and makes connections with Hastings and its still-standing pier. The event runs until Sunday 9th September with a wide range of exhibitions and events taking place across Portobello.
