• Seal on the Beach at Portobello in Edinburgh, UK on 31 March 2024

An unexpected visitor joined the Easter Sunday crowds on Portobello Beach as a young seal plled out onto the sand. It seemed to be merely taking a rest and sunning itself but someone from the SSPCA came to check it out anyway. Apart from some minor scratches it seemed in good health and made its own way back out to sea.
The animal welfare charity's head of education and policy Gilly Mendes Ferreira and Dr Jo Williams, senior lecturer in clinical and health psychology, came along to start the programme at the school. P1 girls held a “dress up as your favourite animal day” on Friday and raised £417.50which was presented a cheque to Lee Williams, Education Officer, of the Scottish SPCA. Isla Wilkie and the boys found a pigeon in the playground trapped between the fence and a neighbours fence. They called the Scottish SPCA (Isla did) as they remembered the phone number from a recent education visit by Scottish SPCA.
