• Russell Findlay speech, at Novotel in Edinburgh, Scotland on 17 April 2025

Pictured: Scottish Conservative leader Russell Findlay

In a speech today, Scottish Conservative leader Russell Findlay said protecting the environment must not mean forcing ever higher bills on workers and families.

He said the focus needs to be on an “affordable transition” instead of the SNP's “so-called just transition”.

Findlay said that nuclear energy holds the key to that affordable transition, and work should be started on up to nine new small modular nuclear reactors to replace the energy that will be lost by closing the Hunterston B and Torness stations.

Scottish Conservative leader Russell Findlay said: “Protecting our environment and tackling climate change is one of the greatest challenges of our age.

But the SNP’s approach is ill-conceived, inconsistent, chaotic and fundamentally dishonest.

I’d like to lay down a challenge to the First Minister.

I am calling for the SNP’s so-called just transition to be scrapped – in favour of an affordable transition.

I urge the SNP to ditch their empty sloganeering and embrace a considered and pragmatic environmentalism.

A new approach that understands the need to protect our economy and jobs.

That takes the common-sense position of using oil and gas in the North Sea before importing fossil fuels from abroad.

A Scottish Conservative transition is an honest, affordable and pragmatic transition.

It keeps household bills low and gives business a level playing field in a brutally competitive world.

Our nation faces losing out on abundant clean nuclear energy and jobs because of the SNP’s bone-headed ideological opposition.

Nuclear power generated 31 per cent of our electricity in 2021. When Hunterston B in Ayrshire closed that dropped to 19 per cent two years later.

Torness, in East Lothian, is Scotland’s last remaining nuclear power station and is due to close as soon as 2030.

By blocking new

  • Russell Findlay keynote speech, at Apex Waterloo Hotel in Edinburgh, Scotland on 14 January 2025

Russell Findlay said today (Tuesday) that the Scottish Conservatives are the only party standing for change in next year's Holyrood election after Labour's decision to let the SNP budget pass.

Labour said last week they no longer stood for change and briefed journalists that they had abandoned the slogan after a series of disastrous moves from Sir Keir Starmer.

The UK Labour government has broken promises on national insurance, the winter fuel payments, taxes on farmers, payments to Waspi women, single sex spaces, energy bills and the North Sea sector.

Findlay also used the speech to set out Scottish Conservative common sense solutions to improve the economy and public services.

The Scottish Conservative leader said his party stands for aspiration, opportunity and fairness.

He highlighted that the Scottish Conservatives are the only party at Holyrood with different policies to the SNP on areas such as the economy, education and housing.

Scottish Conservative leader Russell Findlay said: "The Scottish Conservatives are the only party standing for change, now that Labour have decided to let the SNP budget pass. Labour have admitted they no longer stand for change and it's clear why -
Sir Keir Starmer has broken countless promises within a year of gaining
office. Anas Sarwar won't stand up to Sir Keir Starmer and he looks even more
spineless when it comes to John Swinney.
Labour votes will mean the SNP budget passes, so no wonder they have
dropped the 'change' slogan. They only offer more of the same left-wing
agenda as the SNP have already inflicted on Scotland. In every major vote that matters, from Nicola Sturgeon's gender reforms to
Humza Yousaf's Hate Crime Act, to this latest budget, Labour nod along with
the SNP.

"Anas Sarwar's new slogan is 'new direction', but it should really be no direction. By abstaining to let the SNP budget pass, he's
For Edinburgh Festival and Fringe legend Richard Demarco (94), the history of Scotland begins in the words of the great medieval poets Henryson and Dunbar, the composer Robert Carver and the Scotichronicon, the first important history of Scotland written by Walter Bower. Demarco’s Edinburgh Arts programme, Sandy Moffat’s portraiture and Alan Riach’s work on Scottish literature all follow in their footsteps. These three great patrons of Scottish culture come together for a rambling and enlightening discussion on the state of the Edinburgh festivals and Scotland as a whole.
• Carmen at Festival Theatre, Edinburgh, Scotland on 02 August 2024:

Carmen’s independent heroine, striking Spanish style and unforgettable melodies have permeated popular culture ever since its premiere in 1875.

Opéra-Comique’s new production of Georges Bizet's masterpiece is brought to the stage by conductor Louis Langrée and director Andreas Homoki. This is a classic tale of love, passion and jealousy, following the soldier Don José’s dramatic fall from grace as he meets the free-spirited Carmen.

The score remains true to Bizet’s original vision, with musical pieces interspersed with dialogue, emphasising the comedic elements of the opera. Homoki also weaves in the history of the opera itself, from its scandalous premiere to its accumulating popularity over the following 149 years.

Mezzo soprano Gaëlle Arquez leads as Carmen, a role which she has perfected in international opera houses since 2017.

She performs alongside Albanian tenor Saimir Pirgu as Don José, Carmen’s villainous lover.

The international cast is joined by the Scottish Chamber Orchestra, conducted by Louis Langrée, Music Director of the Opéra-Comique.
This production of Carmen is a fully staged opera.
Last day of Porty Pride weekend in Portobello and lots going on. Shinpike Social Club perfomred on the Prom, followed by the human tower builders of the Colla Castellera d'Edinburgh. Castells - human towers - is a Catalan tradition, recognised by UNESCO in 2010. This tradition consists in building different human towers as people climb on top of each other; the wider the base gets, the higher the castell reaches. And then Montone Avenue closed the street to traffic for a street party with more music and dancing.
